The last marcher
It seems poignant that while our council leaders are warning of potential civil unrest as a result of cuts, the last survivor of the Jarrow March sadly passed away over Christmas.
As reported in the Shields Gazette, Con Shiels was thought to have been the last surviving marcher - one of 207 who made the historic journey to Whitehall, demanding government aid in a time of unemployment and poverty.
