IiP for Education. Tollbar Academy tell their story

“Investors in People has helped us to develop our managers and workforce to take us from being a good school to being one of the best in the country” says Tollbar Academy, an 11-19 mixed comprehensive with approximately 1900 students in Grimsby.

Investors in People Gold accredited, Tollbar Academy started working with the framework in 2001 when their GCSE results were below National Average coupled with a fairly high staff turnover and lack of motivation from some staff.

By developing their staff, Tollbar Academy hoped that recruitment and retention would improve, staff commitment would increase and the ethos of the college would become one of continuous improvement. Investors in People was approached as a framework to support them in taking this forward.

Since working with the framework has guided managers to achieve best practice, benefiting the workforce and the organisation as a whole. Everyone knows how their own work can best contribute to the Academy’s targets and how to improve outcomes.

“Performance Management is now a powerful tool for development. Teaching and support staff at all levels are required to meet SMART targets which relate to the organisation’s aims and they expect professional development to help towards their achievement. Staff meet with their managers regularly and are supported and valued.”

Student outcomes at GCSE A*-C have also improved for Tollbar Academy from 48% to 100% and the all-ability Academy has amongst the best value-added achievements in the country. Staff recruitment and retention has improved tremendously and succession planning is clearly evident, with future managers identified and developed.
