Carillion named for £335m Liverpool hospital scheme
Construction firm Carillion has been selected by Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust to lead a consortium that will deliver a £335m hospital partnership.
The company will carry out construction work on the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Public Private Partnership (PPP) project, as well as delivering support services to the new hospital.
Carillion expects to generate around £80m in revenue over the life of the 30-year concession contract, and anticipates investing £24m in equity towards the project.
Work is set to start shortly after the scheme reaches financial close in January 2014, with completion scheduled for 2017.
Carillion Chief Executive, Richard Howson, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred bidder to deliver the new Royal Liverpool Hospital.
“This is our sixteenth PPP hospital in the UK and I believe our selection for this project reflects Carillion’s outstanding reputation for delivering high-quality, value for money projects.”
The new hospital will be built adjacent to the existing hospital, which is scheduled for demolition once services have been transferred to the new 646-bed building.
Set to be one of the largest North West emergency departments, the new hospital will have 40 beds in its Critical Care Unit and 18 operating theatres, as well as underground parking and easier access for buses.
The hospital will also be environmentally friendly, with renewable energy systems, water meters, leak detection services, cycle points and ten electric car charging points.
The project will pave the way for a Liverpool BioCampus, which will be located where the current hospital is, and will be a major part of regeneration in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter.
Aidan Kehoe, chief executive, at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to unveil the design for the new Royal today.
“The Royal is at the very heart of our City and the creation of a world-class, cutting-edge hospital will transform healthcare in Liverpool.”
“It means that we can create the Liverpool BioCampus, which will spearhead the transformation of the Knowledge Quarter into a bustling and cosmopolitan hub.
“It is a unique opportunity to put the City on the world-stage, along with cities like Boston and Singapore. This is incredibly exciting for the people of the City.”
Carillion’s chief, Mr Howson, concluded: “We look forward to working in partnership with the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospital Trust to deliver a state-of-the-art hospital that will bring substantial benefits to the people of Liverpool.”
“This takes the total value of new orders and probable orders for Carillion in 2013 to over £2 billion and demonstrates the benefits of our strategy of focusing on national construction projects.”
