Thousands of summer jobs still up for grabs
Unemployment among 16-24 year olds remains one of the toughest issues facing the UK economy at the moment. Despite this, data from Adzuna’s jobs search engine reveals the job market is booming this summer for students, university leavers and young part-time workers with over 25,000 part time jobs up for grabs in June (10% up on last year). It is unsurprising to see that Security & Hospitality vacancies dominate this swell in summer jobs with big British sporting events and festivals hiring more than ever before.
Adzuna’s employment market data reveals that Wimbledon is one of the top hiring events this summer with over 7,000 staff working at the Championships this year.
Although many of the positions have been filled, there are still dozens of catering & hospitality jobs up for grabs at the All England Club paying an average salary of £8.50 per hour. Plus you may even catch a glimpse of Andy Murray on Centre Court if you’re lucky.
For those with festival fever Musical Festivals around the country such as Glastonbury, V Festival, Bestival and Wireless are among the top hiring events this summer. Glastonbury alone has created 40,000+ jobs this summer (of which hundreds are still available) - from Back Stage Managers at £20 per hour to Toilet Cleaners at £6.31 per hour. These vacancies may be minimum wage but for the real music lovers you also gain free entry, free camping, free food and, if you’re lucky, special staff bathroom facilities.
Where in Britain are the jobs?
Students and University leavers should head to London and the South East this summer as nearly 60% of all summer jobs advertised this month are to be found in these parts of the country. Down in the sunny hills of the West Country Fruit Pickers & Packers are in unusually hot demand this summer with more than 500 job vacancies currently live.
That is not to say that the only vacancies available are minimum wage car park stewards and strawberry pickers; highly skilled workers earn up to £55 per hour this summer. The best paid temporary jobs are for Emergency GPs and private nurses on hand at the major events, who can earn up to £55 and £40 an hour respectively.
Computer science students and graduates pay attention - There are nearly 1,000 entry level IT summer jobs currently advertised in the UK paying up to £18 per hour. The top paying summer jobs are all in The City of London where economics, finance and IT boffins can earn a packet this summer.
Flora Lowther, head of research at Adzuna, commented, “Having every job ad in the UK in our search engine gives us a real birds eye view of what’s happening in the UK labour market. While youth unemployment continues to be one of the biggest issues facing the UK economy, young people should be buoyed by the number of jobs still available this summer and the wages employers are willing to pay.”
