JCT600 races up Sunday Times Top Track 100

The Yorkshire-based JCT600 has jumped 38 places to be ranked at No 61 in the latest Sunday Times BDO Top Track 100, the annual league table that ranks Britain’s 100 private companies with the biggest sales, and is published this weekend.

Two other Yorkshire-based companies Kelda and Keepmoat feature in the table, and together the three firms employ 8,100 people, have combined sales of £2.7bn and profits of £623m.

In March, JCT600 completed its largest ever takeover when it acquired Gilder Group, another family-owned dealer based in Sheffield.

The firm now operates 47 showrooms in northern England, selling marques such as Audi, Volkswagen and Mini. It also sells prestige cars such as Porsche and Aston Martin. Adding revenues from Gilder and JCT600 together for 2012, the company had revenues of £900m.

However, the biggest company in Yorkshire remains Kelda, whose main subsidiary is Yorkshire Water.

It provides water and sewage services to 4.9m people and 130,000 businesses across the county. It also provides nearly 50% of Northern Ireland’s drinking water. Sales were £962m in 2012.

The companies in Yorkshire feature on the table alongside a number of high-profile national brands, including Virgin Atlantic, Dyson, JCB and John Lewis.

Ian Beaumont, partner and head of Yorkshire at BDO, the title sponsor of the league table, commented on the region’s success stories: “Despite concerns over the health of the national economy, the strong performance of the biggest private companies in Yorkshire shows what can be achieved by management teams that have clear vision and ambition.

“The companies have proven their resilience and adaptability, and by delivering a service-led approach in their markets, they continue to generate the growth so keenly needed.”
