Green headlines go under the radar
Amongst all the Spending Review frenzy there was a couple of key headlines that somewhat slipped under the radar. Firstly, the good news that a further £800m has been devoted to the Government’s Green Investment Bank for 2015-16. That sum is on top of the £3bn originally committed to the Bank.
The announcement was pertinent, not only as energy regulator Ofgem highlighted that narrow energy margins might start to make things a bit hairy unless significant energy provision comes online, but also because the Green Investment Bank’s biggest investment, the Green Deal, has been branded a flop.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change published figures which showed just four households had signed up to the deal in the first four and a half months of the scheme. Labour called it a “wake-up call” for Government, who have dismissed it as a slow start.
Even if it is a slow start, all eyes will be on this latest tranche of money and where it’s heading.
