Independent stores need to draw on unique offerings

In previous blogs, I have discussed the importance for stores to increase their online visibility and stand out from their competitors, and recent research seems to back this up.

Over 10% of British shoppers claim that a lack of mobile and online presence is putting them off shopping, as identified by research from shopping inspiration app, Udozi.

According to the British Retail Consortium’s recent survey, statistics state that in 2012, customers did 10% less of their shopping with cash as online shopping becomes more commonplace.

The research suggests that it is a failure to keep up with the latest technological innovations such as mobile applications which prevents customers from discovering the hidden gems available at independent stores.

Now is not the time to panic, it is the opportunity to be proactive. This is a call to action for many retailers to really stand out from their competitors and look at the way they are positioning themselves within the market place.

For independent stores, there has never been a better time to draw on the offering of an intimate shopping experience – both online and offline. Whether they are in your shop or looking at your website, the customer needs to feel that the interaction is uncomplicated, helpful and stress-free.

Nothing can really replace one-to-one customer engagement in your store. The trick is to make customers feel that they are welcome but without believing that they are being pressurised.

This should be matched online, with the virtual store reflecting the in-store experience.

When increasing your online presence, step out of the box and dare to be a little different. Whether this is through messaging or a strong visual presence, create something that suits your offering and has a positive impact on viewers.

As a store owner, attention to detail both in-store and online, as well as excellent customer service, is a key priority priority and something larger stores struggle to compete with.

Adaptability is key, take your foot off the gas and your competitors will race ahead of you!
