Gateshead Subway franchisee to create six jobs

A Subway franchisee has opened up shop in Gateshead’s new Trinity Square development, promising around six new jobs.

Owen Bradford owns 20 Subway stores across the region and the latest addition to his portfolio is the 1,000 sq ft store on Ellison Walk.

The new outlet will open from 7am to 11pm and hours are likely to be extended when Trinity Square’s cinema opens later in the year, and is expected to attract up to 3,000 customers a week.

Mr Bradford said: “Subway customers are looking for a convenient, healthy option. This brings a healthy fast food option to Trinity Square.

“In the last twelve to eighteen months we’ve reduced the salt content in our products by 33 per cent and, for a healthy lifestyle, customers can see the calorie content of each of our products.”

Leader of Gateshead Council, Mick Henry, said: “The addition of a name like Subway is important in getting the right mix of what’s on offer in Gateshead Centre. We have an existing Gateshead business looking to grow, an international chain having a presence in the centre of town for the first time, and a national chain looking to take on bigger premises too.

“We understand that there are many other names, some of which may well be a surprise, currently in detailed negotiations. All in all, I think we’re going to see the right mix of shops, businesses, restaurants and bars that we need to really give Gateshead Centre a vibrant economy once more.”

Kamran’s Barbers and Ladbrokes are among other names that have recently signed up to take stores in the development.

Steve Henderson, from letting agents Savills, said: “Any successful town centre project is about getting a variety of outlets. These lettings are a key part of that, forming a key part of the bigger picture of giving Trinity Square a diverse offer to shoppers and visitors.

“The variety of businesses that are taking an interest in Trinity Square is very impressive. For example, right now we’re in discussions with a long established firm of solicitors and there is serious interest from the bar and restaurant trades too. All in all it’s adding up to a very compelling all round offer.”
