SGI Legal marks anniversary by gaining ABS status

SGI Legal, the Liverpool based personal injury firm, is changing status to become an alternative business structure (ABS), as part of its plans to change the face of the sector.

The firm, which is based in Brunswick Park, recorded a turnover of £5m in its first year of operation. Currently, SGI Legal has four solicitor partners who concentrate their efforts on running the business rather than earning fees, with six more fully qualified solicitors among its sixty staff.

SGI Legal was set up in July last year by Simon Gibson, former managing partner of another Liverpool law firm, Kirwans, alongside former Kirwans partners Steve Murray and Michelle Stevenson. Simon Shaw is the fourth partner.

From its inception, the firm aimed to embrace new methods Simon Gibson said at the time of its launch: “The legal sector is undergoing a huge transformation at the moment, which is creating significant opportunity for innovative, forward thinking law firms to provide cutting edge legal services to clients.

Now the firm is confident of driving extra efficiency by using technology to free up time and resources. Its qualified solicitors will focus on refining business processes, while undertaking supervision and fee-earning activities appropriate to their skills and cost base.

SGI Legal says it aims to use the ABS licence granted by the Solicitors Regulation Authority to develop a full range of legal and non-legal accident management services under its brand, while seeking external investment and acquisitions.
