Square One Law statement on offshore wind strategy
James Bryce, head of Square One Law’s energy team, says the strategy, which was published by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills on 1 August, will generate much needed confidence in the sector.
“The new offshore wind strategy is an important step forward to bringing many projects that have stalled over recent months to fruition. The strategy with its emphasis on growth, investment and innovation could help our region in particular. The North East has a growing number of companies in the sector including Heerema, IHC Engineering Business, DeepOcean and TAG Energy Solutions that could benefit from the range of measures outlined. Of particular importance is the establishment of a new Offshore Wind Investment Organisation by UKTI to attract inward investment to the UK.
“The offshore wind industry is a crucial element in the energy mix and its importance to the UK economy cannot be under-estimated. The UK is number one in the world for offshore wind power generation in terms of installed capacity, and we have the biggest pipeline up to 2020. While investment has already been made in the region’s supply chains, the strategy will increase focus on the sector as a whole.”
