North East events company completes first local authority contract

A leading North East events company has successfully delivered its first local authority contract, catering for more than 6000 music fans at one of the region’s biggest outdoor concerts.

1879 Events Management, a subsidiary of Sunderland Football Club, was commissioned by South Tyneside Council to provide catering for concert-goers, VIPs and artists at Sound Waves 2013.

The concert, held at Bents Park, South Shields, was headlined by Little Mix and McFly, with additional performances by X Factor winner Joe McElderry, Britain’s Got Talent finalists Luminites and boyband The Vamps.

1879 Events Management, which has a proven track record of catering for large scale events, sold food and drink for the 6000 concert goers, as well as providing a formal three-course meal for 65 special guests and backstage catering for the performers, management and crew.

The company, which has been in operation for just over a year, also provided furnishings for the sponsors’ marquee, along with stewarding and marketing support. It also acted as one of the ticketing agents in the run up to the event.

Gary Hutchinson, Commercial Director at Sunderland AFC, said: “Over the last 12 months 1879 Events Management has catered for a wide range of events and we’re delighted to have now successfully delivered our first local authority contract.

“Sound Waves 2013 was a fantastic event and we hope to have the opportunity to work with South Tyneside Council again in the very near future.”

1879 Events Management, which currently manages the catering and events services at the Stadium of Light, as well as the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, has worked on a number of high profile events since being established in 2012, including the recent Newcastle Pride. This latest contract is its first from a local authority.

Cllr Ernest Gibson, Mayor of South Tyneside Council, which organised and managed the event, said: “1879 Events Management worked extremely well with the council’s events team at Sound Waves 2013 and did a superb job catering not only for the thousands of music fans who came to see the show but for the sponsors, invited guests, artists and crew members who were also taking part.

“I would like to thank all of the firm’s staff for their hard work and enthusiasm and congratulate them on a job well done.”
