McCarthy’s wins Leeds City Council confidential waste disposal contract

McCarthy’s Safe Shred has been awarded a three-year contract to provide secure shredding services to Leeds City Council.

The contract will see the shredding arm of Leeds-based McCarthy’s Removals and Storage collect and safely dispose of around 115 tonnes of confidential waste annually from council offices and other council-run premises, including leisure centres and care homes.

The awarding of the contract coincides with McCarthy’s achieving ISO14001 for environmental management.

McCarthy’s Safe Shred offers on-site shredding of confidential documents, giving businesses complete peace of mind, and with the provision of a certificate of destruction, McCarthy’s also guarantees zero landfill through 100 per cent recycling, helping companies reduce their carbon footprint.

The contract, which was awarded to McCarthy’s Safe Shred based on cost and quality evaluations following a sealed tender process, comes with the option of two one-year extensions.

McCarthy’s is already the approved supplier for the council’s business and domestic removals and storage, helping with everything from office moves to the storage of furniture from council houses whilst refurbishments take place.

McCarthy’s managing director, Mike McCarthy, said: “We have worked with Leeds City Council on the removal side of things for over 20 years, so it’s great to be able to extend the work we do for them with new services we can now provide.

“Safe Shred has been operating for around two years and we’re seeing a strong demand for reliable and cost effective solutions for the destruction of confidential documents.

“Obviously a council has great quantities of confidential waste, such as ballot papers, private correspondence, archives and financial details, and it is important that these are disposed of in the proper way. It’s a big responsibility and one we take very seriously.”
