Do you have a Management Talent Pipeline?

What is a Management Talent Pipeline?

Put simply it is a joined-up approach to leadership development which enables an organisation to utilise the potential of people within an organisation rather than looking for it outside the organisation.

It is more important than ever for organisations to invest in their staff so that they can compete in the global market. Part of this investment needs to be the internal development of leadership skills which will be required to meet the future needs of the organisation.

Recent research by the Institute of Leadership & Management showed that UK organisations rely heavily on external recruitment of managers with just 61% of first line managers and 50% of senior managers being recruited internally. Another finding was that the majority of managers received little no training before or immediately after their appointment. The research also showed that 93% or organisations had concerns that low levels of management skills would have a direct impact on their business achieving its goals.

It’s not rocket science to understand that promoting someone from within is more cost effective than external recruitment. Existing employees know the organisation, have good working relationships and show buy-in to the organisation. They are already there and they can hit the ground running, it is also cheaper than an external recruitment process, so why don’t more organisations do it?

The issue here is the lack of leadership and management skills development within organisations. Skills such as communication, people management, organisation and planning are relevant at all levels of management and they need to be actively developed within employees. Another key finding of the research was the lack of ‘softer’ leadership skills such as emotional intelligence and inspirational and creative attributes, considered essential for 21st century management. These areas are in short supply and often forgotten within traditional management development programmes. It is vital that organisations identify people within the organisation that have the potential to become managers and develop these skills and look to a long term strategy or talent plan.
