Bond Dickinson advises the HCA and Durham County Council on £27m riverside development
A team of lawyers at national firm Bond Dickinson, based in Newcastle, has advised the HCA and Durham County Council on the regeneration of Durham City’s £27m riverside development.
Joint landowners HCA and Durham County Council entered into a development agreement with a development consortium led by Carillion Developments, Arlington Real Estate and Richardsons Capital LLP to invest £27m into the site, which will breathe new life into Durham City’s riverside.
Construction of the project, which will retain and attract up to 800 jobs for Durham City, is now underway, with the construction of a new office building for National Savings & Investments, who will relocate from Milburngate House.
Projects and Procurement Partner Ian Ward led the team who dealt with the negotiation of Development Agreement. He was assisted by Deborah Ramshaw, Antonia Murillo, Lee Parbery and Jeremy Bailey.
Ward commented: “I am delighted to have advised the HCA and Durham City Council on this project. It is a very exciting development for Durham City that will regenerate a derelict site to create a modern, attractive and sustainable development, and will safeguard and attract hundreds of jobs.”
In addition to the construction of the new office building, the site will have a hydro-turbine that will enable it to become the first hydro-powered city centre development in the UK.
The electricity generating hydro-turbine uses an Archimedean screw to harness the power of the river, generating more than 75% of the power required for the building. When the building is not in use, electricity generated by the turbine will be fed into the National Grid.
