New international trade research to be unveiled at Hull event

Professor Steve Johnson, head of the business strategy group at Hull University Business School, will share the results of his new research into how businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber can increase their knowledge of the internationalisation process during a special event at Hull University Business School on 11 November.

His co-speaker will be Mark Robson, director of UK Trade & Investment Yorkshire & Humber, who will talk about some of the practical issues that companies face in trading internationally and the support available.

Professor Johnson said: “This research, carried out in partnership with Hull-based community interest company ‘For Entrepreneurs Only’, looks at how SME can use the most valuable resource of all – the experiences and insights of fellow businesses that have made that difficult step into international markets and survived to tell the tale.

“There is plenty of support available from an array of public, private and voluntary agencies; however research suggests that many smaller businesses are unaware of these resources and may be missing out on opportunities to internationalise.

“Our research suggests that the region’s economy would benefit from internationally successful SMEs working collaboratively with less experienced peers through effective networking and peer support.”

Mark Robson commented: “Everyone can benefit from peer support and advice; and this is one of the main benefits from trade missions, but this does tend to be strategic.

“You still need to do the research, business planning, understand documentation and the range of issues for which you turn to UKTI, the Chamber, and the World Trade Centre.”

The event will be chaired by the East Yorkshire IoD chair, Richard Tuplin.
