North East sixth form media student wows professionals
Anna Geddes, 16, from North Shields, an A Level student from Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College in North Shields, received excellent reviews from her media teacher about a film she recently directed and screened at the Tyneside Cinema.
Anna, who is studying A Levels in English Literature, Film, History and Media, undertook the role of Assistant Director in the production of a film ‘The Cullercaots Fishlass’ which was screened at the Tyneside Cinema on Saturday 23rd November.
The film which was written, directed and produced by 150 youngsters, who are members of ACT 2 CAM Ltd, an acting school and production company dedicated to giving young people skills and experience in film, will be turned into an educational film to be used in schools.
The costume drama which transported the youngsters back over 100 years, was inspired by real-life events in the early years of the 20th century and was a tribute to the strong-minded women of the former fishing community. The story was pulled together from actual events of the time, including a rail strike which prevented the women from selling their fish and controversy in the local press about travelling entertainers working on a Sunday against religious opposition.
The film was made with some financial support from the Northumbria School of English and singer Mark Knopfler.
Anna, who had taken other roles in short films that the company had produced, decided to put herself forward for the role of Assistant Director despite being aware of the dedication and hours of work that this challenging role presented.
Anna said:
“I knew that the Assistant Director role would mean that I would have to totally commit myself to the project but I was excited about gaining the hands on experience and I am now delighted that I put myself forward.
“All of the members of ACT 2 CAM played an integral role in the successful production of the film. We came up with the idea for the film, did the research and even made our own costumes – we are thrilled with the positive reviews that we have received!”
David Bell, Teacher in Media and Film, Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, said:
“The show was a triumph! Anna really helped structure the shots and order the vast cast. We are proud to have a student who has worked on such a valuable community project.
Anna has the potential to progress far in the industry. She has already started working on the new project and I’m keen to get more students involved.“
