Christmas Hamper Project

First year students on the Personal Development Opportunities course in the Preparation for Life and Work Department at TyneMet College organised a Christmas Hamper Project, which included a variety of donated non-perishable food items from family, friends and the local, Morrison’s supermarket in Whitley Bay.

The students decided to donate the hampers to North Tyneside Homes, who give temporary emergency accommodation to people in need in the local area.

Over the last few weeks the students have worked hard as a team to make sure that the hampers would be complete for the deadline this week. They have all enjoyed contributing to this successful venture which has not only helped them to develop their personal and social skills but has also helped improve their literacy and numeracy skills too.

Andrea Cochrane, Acting Head of Preparation for Life and Work, TyneMet College, said:

“Last year the students made 16 hampers to give to North Tyneside Homes so we are delighted to have increased our donation to 17.

“We rely on fundraising money and donations to fill the hampers and I have been informed that a ‘donation bin’ in Morrison’s, Whitley Bay, is now overflowing – we will be collecting all of the items shortly so the students still have a few more hampers to pull together before their collection by North Tyneside Homes later this week.

“Without the support from Morrison’s who kindly allow us to place our ‘donation bin’ in their store, vouchers from Lidl, Battle Hill, and the general public’s generosity we would not be able to make up these hampers which are greatly received by people in the local area.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been involved in the project, especially the students who have worked so hard to complete the hampers!”
