From Child Care Student to TyneMet Staff Member

A former TyneMet Child Care student has jumped at the chance to become a support member of staff, looking after and giving advice to current students.

Akhlima Begum. 18, from Whitley Bay, a former pupil of Whitley Bay High School came to TyneMet College to study on the Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Early Years.

After successfully completing the second year of the Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Early Years in May, she started working at TyneMet as a Support Worker in September this year.

Akhlima said:

“I always wanted to work with young people aged between 13 and 18, for the last placement on my course I worked at TyneMet and supported students studying on their first year of the Level 3 Diploma in Child Care, this role was perfect for me and I enjoyed every minute.

“Once I had finished my course I decided to apply to be a Support Worker to continue working with students at TyneMet on Child Care courses. I was delighted when my tutors recommend me and I was offered a Support Worker role by BS Social care.

“Without the help and support from my teachers here at TyneMet I wouldn’t be where I am today!”

Warick Stephenson, Head of Care, Sport and Leisure at TyneMet College said:

“Akhlima was a very hard working and determined student and very popular amongst her peers.

“Her teachers had absolutely no doubts when recommending Akhlima for her current role. As a Support Worker, here at TyneMet, she will gain some fantastic work experience which will be invaluable to her in the future.

“Akhlima is one of many students who have been recommended by their teachers here at TyneMet to become Support Workers. Other students have been recognised for their focus and drive and we are delighted to support them to come back and work at TyneMet in a variety of supporting roles.”
