Teaming up for grassroots football coaches’ clinic

Two of the North East’s leading sport development organisations are joining forces to support grassroots football across the region.

SAFC’s charity The Foundation of Light is teaming up with Durham County FA (DCFA) for a new workshop designed specifically to help grassroots coaches make the most of their players’ abilities and talents.

The new Coaches Clinic, which is being officially by SAFC’s senior professional development coach Kevin Ball, will run monthly in either Sunderland or Durham County and will be free to attend for coaches from across the North East.

Each three-hour clinic will use a combination of classroom-based activities and practical tuition to tackle a specific issue, such as attacking and defending as a unit, managing player behaviour and structuring training sessions to maximise player development…

The Coaches Clinic, which was successfully trialled in 2012, will be led by the Foundation of Light’s acting football development director Jamie Wright, who previously spent nine years working with five to 11 year-olds at SAFC’s training centre, the Academy of Light.

Workshops will be accredited by Durham County FA to count towards the continued personal development (CPD) for members of the FA Licensed Coaches Club and will also offer additional opportunities for coaches to share best practice and advice.

Gemma Lavery, Head of Workforce Development and Franchise at the Stadium of Light, said: “The Foundation of Light is committed to developing grassroots sport for the benefit of its players and coaches alike.

“This new initiative, which combines our expertise with those of Durham County FA, will not only help attendees in enhancing their professional qualifications but will also offer practical tips and advice that can be taken back to their teams and used on an on-going basis.

Bookings are now being taken for next month’s Coaches Clinic, which will be held at the Academy of Light, Sunderland on Friday, February 21. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis and are strictly limited to 60 attendees.

Anyone interested in taking part in this or future Coaches Clinics is being asked to email gemma.lavery@safc.com as soon as possible or follow @FoLCoachClinic on Twitter for more information. You can also follow Durham FA’s dedicated Twitter account @DurhamFA.
