Campaign to make Northumberland a home fit for heroes

A campaign has been launched to improve employment opportunities for ex-servicemen and women in Northumberland.

In this the centenary of the First World War Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Berwick, has partnered with the X-Forces charity.

X-Forces is a social enterprise that provides advice, business planning, access to funding and on-going mentoring to service leavers, military spouses and partners, reservists, cadets and children of forces personnel to help them set up and run their own business.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan welcomed Ren Kapur, founder and CEO of X- Forces to the North East to meet Norcare which provides support and advice to veterans to help improve their quality of life.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “The North East provides a disproportionately high number of recruits to the services, many of whom settle here again when they are discharged.* I feel organisations such as X-Forces give these individuals a chance to use their experiences and skills to set up businesses in a way that suits them.”

Ms Kapur added: “It was a pleasure meeting with Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Norcare and we were honoured to have the time to go through the tremendous work they have done in such a short period of time. We met many people who are well placed to start thinking about their own venture and had ideas that could turn into successful businesses.”

Anne-Marie Trevelyan has long supported military charities, previously raising awareness and fundraising for SSAFA, Charity Choice and Help for Heroes, to name just a few.

She continued: “I look forward to working with X-Forces and encouraging more mutually beneficial relationships among the North East’s military organisations in order to make sure the talents of ex-military personnel are put to the best use. In this commemoration year it is all the more important to show our support to those who give up their lives to protect to maintain our freedom.”
