Beach challenge to support North East veterans
Fund raisers with a sense of adventure are being invited to sign up for the challenge of a lifetime – and help support a new centre for ex-service men and women.
On March 29 Whitley Bay Promenade and beach will be transformed as scores of people take part in the Warrior Beach Assault, a 10k course with both physical and mental obstacles to negotiate along the way.
Those signing up will face challenges with names such as “Tom Dick and Harry”, “Jacob’s Ladder” and “Galleon” along with the more sinister sounding “Kill Zone” and “Beach Burn.”
But organisers insist the course will be a fun day out for everyone – with the opportunity to support a very worthy cause. Although the event is open to anyone wanting to raise funds for their own particular charity, the main focus is on getting people to sign up to support a new veterans’ centre being built at the Elms West, Sunderland by the Fabrick Group with the Adderstone Foundation and Norcare.
A target of £200,000 has been set to help complete the project which aims to help those leaving the services cope with a return to civilian life, with many veterans having to cope with problems ranging from money issues to a breakdown in family relationships.
The beach assault is being organised by Newcastle based Total Racing International, which specialises in putting together sporting challenge events.
“This is going to be an absolutely brilliant day out and it’s suitable for people at all fitness levels,” said Phil Gray of TRI. “We really hope people will get behind it and come and try something really different and help a great cause at the same time.”
Entry for the event is £49 a person and anyone interested can sign up at www.beachassault.co.uk.
All the money raised through the event will be allocated directly to providing the new veterans’ centre, with plans to hold further events later in the year to help reach the target. “This new veterans’ centre will be a vital resource for the North East and will provide a secure environment for ex-service personnel to receive the support and guidance they need to overcome their issues and regain control of their lives,” said Ian Baggett of the Adderstone Foundation.
