Helping Young People Get Back on Track
Young people across the North East are being given the chance to get Back on Track, with a free course starting next month.
SAFC’s official charity, The Foundation of Light, will be kicking off its latest initiative in March – and is now appealing for 16 to 19 year olds who are not in education, employment or training, to get involved.
The Back on Tracks: Next Steps course, which will run simultaneously at sites in Sunderland, South Shields and County Durham, offers participants the chance to work towards a BTEC Level 3 in Sport and Active Leisure, while improving their communication skills and receiving numeracy and literacy support.
The part-time programme, which uses funding from Gateshead Council, with delivery and support via Sunderland City Council, South Tyneside Council and Durham City Council, is also designed to prepare young people for work by boosting their employability and confidence.
Everyone who completes the course will be offered complimentary tickets to an SAFC home game, as well as access to volunteering opportunities with the Foundation of Light.
Allen Hall, at the Foundation of Light, said: “This is a great programme for young people who have left school but aren’t sure what to do next.
“Previous Back on Track courses have proven extremely successful because we focus on creating a relaxed but supportive environment, which helps participants get the most out of the sessions.”
Back on Track is one of a host of similar sport and education-based programmes which are run by the Foundation of Light and benefit more than 42,000 young people and their families across the North East every year.
Participants on this particular programme, which runs for up to 12 weeks, will be given lunch money and have all of their travel expenses reimbursed.
