School students back red & white city

Pupils at a County Durham primary school are helping to turn the region red and white ahead of SAFC’s Capital One Cup final this weekend.

Students at West Rainton Primary School, Houghton-le-Spring, are hanging red and white decorations in support of the Red & White City campaign run by SAFC’s official charity, the Foundation of Light.

The campaign is designed to capture the excitement that is gripping Wearside ahead of the final on Sunday March 2 and give those unable to make the journey to Wembley a chance to get involved.

Alison McDonough, Head teacher at West Rainton Primary School, said: “Many of our pupils are really excited about the Capital One Cup final and this is a great way for them to express that enthusiasm and show support for the Foundation of Light and the wider community as a whole.”

As part of the Red & White City campaign, schools, businesses and SAFC supporters across the region are being encouraged to hang decorations like the pupils at West Rainton Primary School or wear the club’s trademark red and white stripes.

Those taking part can then share photos of their efforts by emailing them to info@foundationoflight.co.uk or tweeting @SAFCOfficial using the hashtag #DaretoDream, with the chance to win free tickets to an SAFC game at the Stadium of Light.

The Foundation of Light is also fundraising through the Red & White City campaign with participants being asked to make a £1 donation to the charity. This can be collected by participating schools or businesses, or donated directly via a special Just Giving page - www.justgiving.com/safc

Proceeds will be used to support the Foundation of Light’s wide range of sport and education-based programmes, which benefit more than 42,000 young people and families across the North East every year.

Lesley Spuhler, Chief Executive at the Foundation of Light, said: “It’s been fantastic to see the support for the Red & White city campaign already this week and we hope that more places like West Rainton Primary School will come on board in the build up to Sunday’s big game.”
