Unveiling of £5million scheme to kickstart council events

Summer will be coming to South Tyneside early this year, with a major carnival-style, launch event to celebrate the completion of an ambitious £5million project.

South Tyneside Council annually has a programme of entertainment which runs from June right through to August.

But this year the party will be starting even earlier, when the borough’s new promenade and sea defence system is officially unveiled in style on Saturday April 5.

The opening of the Little Haven Promenade, which stretches 500m from the Haven Point Leisure Centre along the edge of Littlehaven Beach, marks the end of the two year project aimed at improving the beach and promenade and strengthening the surrounding sea defences.

Plans for the fun-filled day include live entertainment along the promenade, as well as a host of family activities such as Frisbee throwing and treasure hunts.

The promenade’s new performance space will also be in use throughout the afternoon with a host of performances, including Ceilidh bands, Dixieland jazz and carnival music.

Among the acts set to appear are South Tyneside School Samba drummers, South Tyneside Gymnastics club and Westoe Brass Brand, with more still to be announced.

A commemorative plaque will be unveiled during the day, beside a specially-commissioned sail artwork outside the recently opened Haven Point Leisure Centre.

The event will end with a spectacular firework and lighting show, which includes a choreographed display set to music, incorporating the specially-designed street lights positioned along the promenade itself.

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader for South Tyneside Council, said: “The official launch of the Little Haven Promenade is going to be an amazing event for all ages and will be a fantastic opportunity for everyone to see the culmination of this exciting project.

“At the same time it will be great early start to our usual exciting programme of summer activities.”
