Darlington Accountants Learn from Charities

Accountants in Darlington met this week at the Blackwell Grange Hotel to hear representatives from local charity, St Teresa’s Hospice, and international charity, The Red Cross, speak about how they are financed and funded.

The evening, organised by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), gave attendees the chance to hear about the challenges faced by a small to medium sized local charity, St Teresa’s Hospice from its CEO, Jane Bradshaw, and Finance Director, Nicola Myers ACMA. The pair talked about donor relationships and how they ensure that they make the most of every pound raised for them, ensuring maximum value.

Tanya Greenwell ACMA, UK Business Analysis Manager at the British Red Cross was also there to talk about the different challenges faced by a large charity. She presented about the work that the British Red Cross is doing both in the UK and across the globe and how its Finance Department is organised to support this.

Mike Ashwell, FMCA, CIMA Teeside Branch Chairman said “These talks from both St Teresa’s Hospice and the Red Cross were fascinating to those of us who have a keen interest in the different challenges faced by small and large charities. Not only did it give us a better understanding about funding issues, but also about the optimal ways that finance departments can be structured and organised to ensure they wholeheartedly support the charity’s goals.”
