Kickstart a Career in Sport

Aspiring fitness instructors and sports coaches across the North East can kickstart their career with free help from a leading charity.

SAFC’s official charity, The Foundation of Light, has launched a new BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport – and is accepting late sign ups until March 26.

The 20 week course, which is running at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, is specifically designed for people aged 19 and over who are interested in pursuing a career in sport and leisure.

Participants must attend classes three days per week and complete eight assessment-based units, tackling subjects including anatomy and physiology and planning a fitness programme.

They also undergo a short work placement to gain practical experience and enhance employability, with all expenses provided.

The current BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport course, which launched last week, already has 10 students but the Foundation of Light has agreed to accept last minute entries for those unable to wait for the next course in September.

Course tutor Paul Leach, said; “The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport course has already started but it’s highly possible for participants to catch up if they enrol now.

“This is ideal for anyone keen to kickstart a career in the sport and leisure industry as soon as possible and I would urge those people to get in touch.

“The course is a great mix of classroom activities and practical work experience which we’ve found to be incredibly useful when it comes to applying for jobs.”

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport, funded by South Tyneside Adult and Community Learning, is one of a series of sport and education-based programmes run by the Foundation of Light, which benefit more than 42,000 young people and families across the North East every year.

Anyone interested in the current course is asked to contact Paul Leach on 0191 5515319 or paul.leach@safc.com before March 26. The same details can also be used to register interest in the course starting in September.
