Sales Nugget – Rejection
Met several young people last week who are just starting out in business. They all have some great ideas, products, services, and lots of enthusiasm. They have all these fantastic attributes but there is one thing missing that when they have them it will increase their chances of success – selling skills!
They all agreed they don’t have any selling skills however having met them I am confident they will learn how to sell themselves and their products. The one area of concern to them was that they didn’t know if they could handle rejection.
In the last few months they had been trying to sell but had come across many examples of rejection. Handling rejection was something that took me a long time to figure out. As I explained to these young people professional salespeople deal with rejection on a regular basis. During the early days they can face rejection in many areas including cold calling, prospecting, not being able to get through to decision makers and getting lots of no’s.
Rejection is not personal and there is no denying it can dent your confidence and put self-doubt into your mind. However professional salespeople learn how to mentally toughen themselves and learn how to handle it.
There are several ways you can handle rejection including taking time out to go for a coffee, go for a walk, talk to someone who cheers you up or the best of all win some business.
If you are a new start business or new to sales and you don’t think you can handle rejection maybe sales isn’t for you. As a professional salesperson you need to be prepared both physically and mentally. At times it can be overwhelming however it is possible to manage it.
It did take me a while to handle it however remember rejection is not personal!
If you really want to face regular rejection try taking a new product or idea to market. This is real rejection however if you have a new product or idea there is some fantastic help for you in the North East and here is one brilliant example.
