What type of worker are you?

Have you ever wondered what motivates you to not press snooze on that alarm in the morning? To actually get up, get dressed, and drag yourself to work every day? Everybody works differently, and everybody has different motivations to do that work. But which one are you?

When you’re toiling away all week long, are you just looking forward to the weekend? Are you planning where you might be going out, who you’ll be seeing and what exciting non-work related things you’ll be doing? In that case, you are probably a job-orientated worker. These types of workers see work as something nine to five that they have to do in order to afford bills/hobbies/fun things – in other words, they work for nothing other than their paycheque at the end of each month.

At the other end of the spectrum are the calling workers, whose entire lives seem to revolve around work, and they see work as not so much a career, as an identity. They don’t care as much about the paycheque, or the status, but rather their motivation lies in enjoyment of the job itself, and their notion of having a lack of identity without it.

In comparison to these two types of workers, career-orientated workers are more interested in broadening their horizons, and scaling the career ladder than their paycheques. They are motivated by the prospect of enhancement and promotion, and they work because they want to be successful in their careers. These kinds of workers relish and enjoy rising in socio-economic status through their job.

Of course these categories are not mutually exclusive, and you can easily fall into all of them in some aspects (or maybe on just the kind of day you’re having!) However, it’s worth thinking about which type of worker you are, and perhaps if that’s the type of worker you would like to be throughout your future career.

No one wants their job to be the ‘be all and end all’ of their lives, but you should also see it as more than just a way to pay your bills. To really succeed in any industry, motivation and keenness for hard work and promotion are essential.
