MP Visits Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College
Alan Campbell MP visits Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College in North Shields
Following well-received visits to the Queen Alexandra Campus in 2011, 2012 and 2013, Alan Campbell, MP for Tynemouth, returned, for a fourth time, to engage with A Level students in a question and answer session.
As he had in previous years, Alan came to meet with the A Level students and explain a little about himself and his role as an MP.
Most of the questions asked by the students concerned educational issues as well as questions about tuition fees and Labour’s manifesto on education. Questions were also raised around social mobility, inequality within the education system, gender issues and comparisons between the different education systems that have existed during the last fifty years.
Alan was also asked whether or not he thought the Labour Party still represented the people it was established to represent and Labour Party issues. Some students were interested in finding out how they could become involved in the world of political campaigning.
Alan’s office subsequently got in touch with the College to say how impressed he had been with the students who attended and the questions he was asked - a glowing testament to those who participated in the event.
Denise Bolton, Head of Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, said:
“We will continue to hold debates and events like this one as it is important that the students get an understanding of current economic and political issues.
“In an era where the youth of today are often criticised for their apathy and lack of political conviction, this event was clear evidence to the contrary.
“We encourage students to take part in these events so that they can discuss first hand any issues or concerns that they may have for their future.”
