19 year-old Mason Patterson outside Peace & Loaf with Dave Coulson

A restaurant owned by top chef and TV celebrity Dave Coulson has taken on a new apprentice with Gateshead College.

Dave, a 2010 finalist in the BBC hit series Masterchef: The Professionals, launched Peace & Loaf restaurant on Jesmond Road in November last year. He has now taken on Mason Patterson, on a two-year apprenticeship.

The 19 year-old from Fenham is spending one day a week at Gateshead College and four days at the restaurant, where he is learning how to make taste-bud tempting meals including Dave’s deconstructed chicken and mushroom pie made famous through the BBC competition.

Dave, who has more than 13 years’ experience in the restaurant industry, said: “Apprenticeships aren’t just for the bigger companies. They are a cost-effective way for small firms to train their workforce to a high standard and make their business more competitive.

“I believe that small companies can benefit from apprenticeships and that’s why I’ve given Mason this opportunity.

“Already he has demonstrated the skills, aptitudes and strong work ethic needed to help Peace and Loaf thrive in this competitive industry. He came from Gateshead College with a good basic knowledge of the industry and he will pick up further skills during his time with us.”
