Cash boost for hospice from city businessman

Douglas Macmillan Hospice have welcomed a cash boost as they prepare to unveil a new Day Therapy Unit facility.

As the need for Hospice services expand within the local community the need for the support of local individuals and companies becomes increasingly more important. New Hospice developments include the beginning of the construction of a brand new Day Therapy Unit.

In addition to the current day therapy unit, built in the mid-80s, a government grant has allowed building work on the new unit to start last June which will allow an increase in respite care and therapeutic services and is due to open its doors in August.

City businessman Phil Wood, a keen supporter of the Blurton hospice, presented £500 after staging a British-themed charity quiz night which drew teams of bankers, solicitors and accountants from across North Staffordshire to Residence Restaurant in Nantwich

Staff at his insolvency company, BCR in Newcastle, back the Douglas Macmillan Hospice by fundraising with dress down Fridays.

Including this most recent donation the Barringtons group have now contributed over £12,000 to the Hospice.

Mr Wood, a warm supporter and member of the hospice’s Annual Ball committee, said: “I will never forget the dedicated care the hospice gave my mother in her final days.

“Anything that can be done to ease the plight of patients and families on life’s most difficult journey has to be welcomed.

“With the arrival of the new Day Therapy Unit comes an increase in Hospice running costs and we were delighted to be able to show our support.”

Liz Clarke, Head of Fundraising said: “Year on year the Hospice aims to reach more people in the local community when they need us most. The new Day Therapy Unit will help us offer improved day care services to local people facing life limiting illnesses across North Staffordshire.

“It will create a bright and airy space designed to lift the mood and provide modern comforts. There will be a gym and various physiotherapy and psychological services alongside art therapy.

“We are incredible grateful to the support of Phil and his team, we can only encourage other local businesses to follow in his footsteps.”

In addition to the British themed quiz, Phil is a great supporter of the Annual Ball which is currently in its 10th Anniversary Year. The Enchantment Ball is to be staged at Keele Hall on October 4th.

The Annual Ball is a great way to bring the local community and the Hospice together. Last year, items of work produced by patients during art therapy were sold in an auction on the night.

He added: “Patients have taken to art therapy with great enthusiasm. Their work often astounds us. One piece sold for hundreds during the auction at last year’s ball and BCR are happy to contribute to the auction by offering a luxury holiday as a lot.”
