Awards appeal from leading charity

A leading North East charity is in line for a prestigious national award and is now appealing for help in making it onto the final shortlist.

Northern Pride, which aims to reduce homophobia and promote equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community across the North East, has been nominated for The National Diversity Awards 2014.

The awards, which celebrate unity in society, are based on public nominations and judged on the quantity and quality of the votes, as well as evidence provided by the organisation themselves.

Mark Nichols, Chair of Northern Pride, which has been nominated in the Community Organisation category, said: “Since being founded in 2007, Northern Pride has worked tirelessly to create a safe environment where members of the LGBT community can promote their culture and work towards moving the social exclusion endured by many.

“We’re delighted that these efforts have been recognised in a nomination for the National Diversity Awards 2014 and hope that people across the North East will get behind us and show their support.”

Nominations for the National Diversity Awards 2014, in association with Microsoft, close on Friday July 18, which coincidentally also marks the start of Northern Pride’s three-day festival of live music and entertainment, Newcastle Pride.

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony at the Hurlingham Club, London on September 26.

Paul Sesay, Chief Executive of The National Diversity Awards, said: “It is an honour to witness the extraordinary journeys of Britain’s unsung diversity heroes and I would like to wish all of our nominees, including Northern Pride, the very best of luck.”
