Internal Marketing: Is your business doing enough?

A business or firms most important resource is of course their employees, and these particular resources need constant investment. If a company doesn’t practice good internal marketing, it can have a detrimental effect on the whole business.

So how do businesses go about providing good internal marketing? The answer is simple - treating your employees as you would a customer, by having in place good systems that will benefit them and adhere to their needs. Service companies, most crucially need proficient internal marketing systems, as their employees are the face thats representing them, so an unhappy and unsatisfied worker leads to unhappy and unsatisfying business results.

Knowing what sort of perks to provide your employees with is tricky, it can be entirely dependent on the type of company you are. An example could be that you feel your employees should always be knowledgeable and up to date on what is happening across the business, therefore providing a weekly email/news bulletin can achieve this. Additionally, many companies feel their business can improve with feedback from staff, so a monthly meeting or even an informal lunch can give people the chance to express their concerns.

Depending on the size of your business, will most likely effect the size and type of benefits you can provide, for example many large businesses now have health care benefits in place. But if you can’t afford that size of perk, then consider a more hands on and informal benefit, such as monthly nights out with your team, things such as bowling or trips to places of interests on a weekend. These options are more cost-effective, and can break down the boss-employee barrier which can produce a more happy environment at work, and most people enjoy fun days out!

From a Services point of view, a simple way to look at the overall benefit of internal marketing is, that good service moves from the management through to their employees, which will then move through to the customers or clients.
