Cheesy Does It: Primula Gets Behind Newcastle’s Race For Life

Cancer we’re coming to get you!

That was the message shouted by event sponsor Primula and thousands of female runners, joggers and walkers who descended on Newcastle Racecourse this weekend for the city’s annual Race For Life. Primula also supported events in Herrington and Saltwell Park.

In its bid to show cancer who’s boss, Primula – which continues to produce Primula cheese and dips at its base in Gateshead – joined thousands of entrants for the race, who were put through their paces and created a sea of pink across the course to show their support for families who have been affected by the disease.

Speaking at the event Paul Lewney, MD for Primula Cheese said: “We’ve all been touched by someone with cancer, and in our own business we have a number of colleagues who have battled with the disease - looking at all the faces today brings it home how personal it is! Not many people know but Primula are owned by a charitable foundation, with money from every tube, tub and dip going towards good causes. With Primula being made in the North East, we wanted to work with this fantastic charity up here and we’re looking forward to being a supporter in the future.”

Race For Life participant, Rebecca Currie, added: “It means the world to me, to try and raise money for Cancer Research and raise awareness.

“I can’t believe how many people have turned out, and how many people are affected in so many different ways, but it’s great to see we’re united and behind the cause.

We raised money and showed a lot of strength for my mam. She’s recently overcame cancer and we’re all very proud.“

The events at the weekend saw £490,000 raised for Cancer Research. Every week around 260 people in the North East are told they have cancer. The Race For Life is the biggest all female sporting event in the UK and has fast become one of the key dates in the North East’s calendar. The Race for Life North East 2014 has seen a phenomenal number of supporters and runners turning up at each race and the five events in the North of the region saw almost 13,500 ladies running, whilst many more thousand supporters cheered on.

The ‘lovely ladies’ from Primula handed out free tubes of Primula cheese to all the ladies at the finish line and gave deserved hugs to all those who needed one – they were many!

The company also erected a Primula gazebo and gave away free recipe cards and handed one lucky winner a mini spa break at Rockcliffe Hall.

In June of this year the Tyneside based company launched its latest addition to the cheese spread category - Primula Kids Mild Squeezy Cheese - in response to demand for healthier options from mums.

The new addition to the Primula range contains the lowest salt, fat, calories and highest cheese and calcium content of any branded spreadable cheese on the market. The product also contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.
