BCL Legal’s in-house survey highlights salary & bonus differences across UK

BCL Legal - the legal recruitment consultancy which operates from offices in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol and Reading – has this week launched its annual salary survey of in-house lawyers working across the regions.

The survey analysed salaries, bonuses and general benefits from NQ to 23 years’ plus PQE. The findings once again reiterated that that average salaries varied hugely between the North West, the Midlands & the Yorkshire/ North East regions.

The average salaries for in-house lawyers with one to 10 years’ PQE varied between £42,000 and £115,000 depending on location. Individual regions were as follows: The North West - £44,000 to £115,000, the Midlands - £42,000 to £99,000 and Yorkshire/ the North East - £42,000 to £110,000.

The average salary for NQs in the North West was £38,000, in Yorkshire/ North East it was £36,000 and in the Midlands it was £38,000. During the same survey, 78% of in-house lawyers in the North West stated that they received a bonus in 2013 with the average being 20% of their salary. Whilst in the Midlands the figures were 81% and 19%, and in the Yorkshire/ North East they were 73% and 20% respectively.

Other findings include comparisons on car allowances, pension contributions, holidays and private medical insurance.

Mark Levine, director of BCL Legal and head of its in-house department, said: “The in-house market has certainly become stronger over the past 12 months and this analysis gives a comprehensive overview of remuneration in the key regions.

“Our research has also shown that whilst salary is – of course - central, many in-house lawyers have also seen their overall packages improve. Yorkshire/ the North East is leading the way with 73% of our interviewees seeing an increase with both the North West and the Midlands only slightly behind at 68%.“

The complete surveys for each region can be viewed on BCL Legal’s website.
