Kier praised for work experience programmes

Kier Services’ efforts to provide work experience and apprentice opportunities to local communities across its contracts in Sheffield, Barnsley, Boston and Lincoln have been recognised as ‘outstanding and excellent’ following a national audit.

The company, which delivers repairs and maintenance to more than 240,000 homes across the country, was awarded a Silver Level Work Experience Quality Standard by Fair Train, which assesses employers’ work experience and apprenticeships commitments.

Kier Services was recognised for its performance in providing mentoring to each student, undertaking regular reviews and giving constructive feedback to all learners.

Fair Train spoke to employees and work experience students to assess Kier’s programme. Learners Harry Thompson and Niall Archer both undertook work experience placements at Kier Sheffield and found the experience so valuable that they have both continued to work with Kier to improve their skills. They are now hoping to progress onto an apprenticeship programme.

Kier regional director, Phil Oades, said: “Providing the local area with work experience and apprenticeship opportunities is essential for creating a sustainable community and a key priority for Kier. We are so proud of all the students who come to work with us for the hard work they put in to supporting the region and developing their own skills.

“Being recognised by Fair Train for our work experience programme is testimony to the efforts and expertise of our employees, as well as the hard work put in by the students who come to work with us.”
