North beats south when it comes to most popular relocation cities

New research has revealed that the north of England is in fact a more desirable location than the south for many job seekers, flying in the face of traditional thinking on which part of the country enjoys the best employment opportunities.

The study, commissioned by award-winning digital marketing recruitment agency, The Candidate, found that 54% of employees surveyed would choose to work in a northern city if they were given a choice, with less people (45%) saying they would be willing to relocate to London.

The increasing desirability of working in the north can be, in part, connected to the move of the BBC to MediaCityUK in Salford, which commenced in 2011. This encouraged huge growth in the surrounding regions, in industries such as production, technology development, training and digital media.

The research was undertaken by The Candidate to discover the importance of looking further afield when recruiting new employees, in order to maximise the chances of securing the best candidates.

Brian Matthews, managing partner of The Candidate said: “Businesses increasingly need to consider candidates located outside of their immediate catchment areas. Our research shows that employees are keen to work in the north given the opportunity, but it is up to companies outside of London to make sure that they offer compelling job opportunities.

“The digital skills shortage in the North of England is a problem for many businesses, offering competitive relocation packages to potential employees will pull talent from further afield.”
