Community worker claims stylish victory over Gus Poyet
A Sunderland community worker has beaten Premiership football manager Gus Poyet to be named the city’s newest style icon.
Karen Wood, a Community Development Worker at Pallion Action Group, beat the Black Cats boss in a public vote to claim the Icon Award at the Sun FM Style Awards 2014.
The awards, held recently at the Best Western Roker Hotel, featured a total of 19 accolades, all designed to recognised Sunderland’s greatest people and places.
Other individual winners at the star-studded ceremony, compered by TV presenter Terry Christian, included Yummy Mummy Kirsty Bruce, John Rose, owner of what is now Sunderland’s Most Stylish Home and boxer Anthony Hardy, who was crowned the city’s Most Stylish Sporting Star.
Eight year old Sophie Campion, who suffers with dyspraxia and hyper mobility, was named Inspirational Youth in recognition of her positive attitude and willingness to help others, while #Sunderland Hour founder Helen Colquhoun was applauded for her contribution to the community.
The Sunderland Empire and Sunderland Airshow were also among the evening’s winners with guests enjoying live performances by Evolution Dance Crew, the Pierces and soul singer Alexander O’Neal.
Julian Carter, Managing Director of Sun FM, said: “This was a chance to really celebrate what makes Sunderland great and to honour those whose personal achievements and contribution to the city can often go unnoticed.
“All of our winners are truly deserving of their accolades and I would like to thank Terry Christian, the Pierces, Alexander O’Neal and everyone else involved for making it such a special and memorable evening.”
