Tyneside Restaurant Hopes to Retain its Title

A North East restaurant is hoping to retain its title for a second year, after finding it has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Jashn, at Whickham Bank, Swalwell, was named North East Restaurant of the Year at last year’s English Curry Awards and is once again on the shortlist for 2014.

The venue, which launched in 2011, specialises in cooking authentic Indian dishes with little or no oil or butter, making them ideal for dieters and those monitoring their fat intake.

This year’s nomination is a result of the restaurant being put forward by its diners to the English Curry Awards, which are now taking place for the fourth time to recognise and reward people working in every aspect of the British curry industry.

“We are absolutely delighted to find ourselves on the shortlist for the second year,” said Kucon Mohammed, co-owner of Jashn.

“It was amazing to take the regional title last year and we know that we are up against strong competition yet again but we’re hoping we can repeat our success.”

The restaurant won’t have long to wait to find out if they have retained their title, with the winners revealed at a ceremony at Manchester’s AJ Bell Stadium on October 13.

There are 14 categories in the awards, covering everything from Curry Lover of the Year to the best restaurant in each region.

“Jashn is relatively unique in the way that all of its dishes are prepared and cooked with the bare minimum of fat, artificial colouring and salt, to make them as healthy as possible,” said Mr Mohammed.

“But the fact that this doesn’t in any way make them less delicious and we’re glad our diners have recognised this and nominated us again.”
