Trainee joiner builds up for national award

A trainee joiner from South Elmsall has been shortlisted for a national housebuilders Young Achievers award.

Harrison Tucker has been recognised for his hard work and dedication by Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire and will represent the region in the national finals, taking place on 24th October.

The 17 year-old will join 23 other regional nominees with the aim of receiving the Persimmon Homes Trade Apprentice of the Year title.

The inaugural Young Achievers award programme was launched by Persimmon Homes earlier this year to showcase its apprentices and sales trainees who have gone above and beyond to succeed in their role.

The housebuilder believes it’s important to invest in its young workforce, with the chief executive, Jeff Fairburn placing emphasis on the role trainees can play in the business’s future as he himself started in the construction industry as a 17-year-old apprentice quantity surveyor.

Wayne Gradwell, managing director of Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “We manage a robust apprentice programme taking more than 100 young people into the business nationally each year.

“We feel it is important to reward those youngsters who have got off to a flying start and Harrison is a perfect example of this.

“He joined the business in September 2013 and embarked on a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship. During his first year, Harrison has displayed great commitment and natural skills both onsite and at college, where he has consistently achieved A and B grades for his work.”

Harrison will be joining two other West Yorkshire nominees, Alexandra Hope, who is going forward for the Sales Trainee of the Year title and Thomas Merry, for the Business Trainee of the Year award. Cash prizes with be presented for national category winners as well as the overall Young Achiever of the Year 2014 accolade.

Wayne added: “It wasn’t easy choosing the individuals to best represent our region. However, we feel that Harrison, Alexandra and Thomas are shining examples of our future workforce and are well on the road to forging successful careers in the construction sector.

“We would like to wish them the very best of luck in the finals, but to us they are already winners.”
