Biochemica gains green credential for fourth consecutive year

Water and wastewater treatment specialist, Biochemica UK Ltd has achieved the internationally recognised standard, ISO14001 in acknowledgement of its efforts towards reducing the company’s day-to-day impact on the environment.

ISO14001 sets out a framework for firms to identify and control their environmental impact and provides practical tools to ensure continuous improvement of environmental performance. Accreditation is awarded to companies that can demonstrate that their Environmental Management System (EMS) complies with the standard requirements.

Independently owned Biochemica, which is headquartered in Teesside, was first ISO14001 certified in 2010 and has met its strict criteria and successfully passed the comprehensive external audit process year-on-year.

General Manager at Biochemica, Stephen Andrew is responsible for the implementation of the company’s EMS and handled the latest audit assessment. He said: “At Biochemica, we recognise the social and economic importance of protecting the environment and strive to lead by example in promoting a sensitive, considered approach towards managing our responsibilities.

“Our commitment to operating sustainable practices extends throughout all of our business activities and we have made significant headway in meeting our objectives.”

As part of its EMS, Biochemica has developed initiatives to target key areas such as the reduction, reuse, recycling and disposal of waste, and making economic use of energy, water and transport resources.

Stephen added: “Since we established our EMS four years ago, Biochemica has grown rapidly meaning we have greater environmental impacts to consider which must adhere to continuous improvement. For instance, as a result of increased demand for our chemical distribution operations, we reassessed our procedures for waste disposal and now have a robust process in place for recycling kegs and IBCs and packaging to further minimise our dependency on landfill.

“We have also addressed additional means to reduce carbon emissions to enhance our current initiatives through improved planning and logistics systems.”

On top of its operations based EMS, Biochemica is focusing on providing a wider sustainable offering to its UK wide client base with the launch of its eco-friendly division, Ecochemica.

Spearheading Ecochemica and its range of ‘green’ water and wastewater treatment chemical products and technical services, is Biochemica’s Commercial and Technical Director, Dr Tim Robinson. He said: “Supplement to our own environmental commitments, we work closely alongside our clients to develop innovative solutions for their water processes which not only help to achieve their individual environmental and sustainability goals, but also reduce costs.

“Ecochemica was created with this in mind and we are dedicated to continually investing in and expanding our exclusive eco-friendly EcoChem chemical product range, technologies and services to complement our environmental credentials.”
