Children’s charities to benefit from bags of cash

Three children’s charities will benefit from carrier bag charges introduced in Scotland this week, thanks to family footwear retailer Charles Clinkard.

The family-run company, which is based in Teesside, is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, will donate the cash from the sale of carrier bags in its three Scottish stores to CLIC Sargent, Make a Wish Foundation and Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.

The mandatory 5p per bag charge came into force on October 20, and the three charities are each expected to benefit by around £2,000 in the first year.

Charles Clinkard managing director said: “While we understand the environmental rationale and potential benefits behind the introduction of the charges, we felt compelled to make sure that the money went to worthy causes.

“As a family retailer who has been expertly fitting children’s shoes since 1924 we know how important it is that youngsters receive the right care and attention, whatever their needs.

“The support that these three charities give to young children and their families is invaluable and is certainly a cause worth supporting.”

Bags sold in the company’s Sterling Mills store will benefit CLIC Sargent; Kirkcaldy store will support Make a Wish Foundation; and Glasgow store will boost the funds of Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.

Charles Clinkard - which has 33 stores nationwide – is now considering widening its policy to its other stores when bag charges are introduced in England in 2015.
