Birmingham hotel housekeeper sweeps up 15-year career

The housekeeper of a Birmingham hotel is celebrating after sweeping up a 15-year career at the venue.

Amina Darr is the longest serving employee at Campanile Hotel Birmingham in Chester Street, Aston.

The 43-year-old joined as room attendant two-weeks after its opening back in 1999. She had previously struggled to find work in the city and was eager to enter the hospitality industry.

She has since worked as an assistant housekeeper at the venue before securing a promotion to become head housekeeper 10 years ago.

Amina oversees a team of 15 people and is responsible for the day-to-day cleaning and maintenance of the hotel including organising the hotel cleaning rota, and completing room standard and quality checks.

She is now using the wealth of knowledge and experience she has built-up while working at the hotel to help update its standard of operations manual.

“I really enjoy working at Campanile. I have a fantastic team of staff around me and we are all really motivated and strive to get the job done,” she said.

“I have witnessed a number of changes at the venue since it was first established including a complete renovation of the hotel rooms, lounge and dining area.

“I didn’t expect to still be working here 15 years later but it is really good to be able to have an input by helping to update the hotel’s standard of operations manual.

“The manual sets out the policies and protocols at the hotel with the aim of making the information clear and accessible to other employees and as the longest serving member of staff I have a good knowledge of what works best.”

Alex McLean, general manager at Campanile Hotel Birmingham, which is part of the French-based company Louvre Hotels Group, said it is always positive to see a member of staff establish a long-standing career at one venue.

“It is great to see that Amina continues to enjoy her role at the hotel and it is thanks to the hard work, dedication and moral of her and the rest of the team that we continue to operate effectively,” he said.

“We have asked for Amina’s input whilst we update our policies as we felt that she will be best-placed to comment on procedures having witnessed numerous changes in both management and operation over the years.”
