Wiggett Construction to buy Kirklees College site
Kirklees College have agreed to sell their 6.1 acre New North Road site to Oldham-based Wiggett Construction Group for an undisclosed sum.
Contracts have now been signed enabling Wiggett Construction Group to acquire the site, to be known as Trinity Central, which was made redundant when the college moved to new premises at Waterfront Quarter in 2013.
The Oldham-based Wiggett Construction Group was established some 36 years ago and operates on both sides of the Pennines on a variety of housing and commercial projects.
Phil Wiggett, Managing Director of Wiggett Group commented that he was very pleased to be working with the Kirklees College team and Kirklees Council to bring about the redevelopment of this substantial gateway high profile site.
The Wiggett Group will endeavour to maximise the benefits of the scheme for the local economy, both in terms of employing local sub-contractors, suppliers and building trade workers. Importantly, Wiggett will also work with Kirklees College on training opportunities.
In terms of indicative programme, Wiggett’s intention is to submit a planning application within the next few months leading to a start on site in 2015.
Peter McCann, principal at Kirklees College said, “We’re pleased to have taken a step forward with the sale of our former site. The Wiggett Construction Group is keen to create a development that will benefit the local community and we’re hopeful that our former site will be used to great effect for the people of Kirklees.”
Cllr Peter McBride, Kirklees Cabinet member for Investment and Regeneration said: “We are looking forward to seeing Wiggett Construction’s proposals for the site. The former college campus is a key gateway to Huddersfield Town Centre and so I welcome the news that proposals to redevelop the site are being actively pursued.”
