Cloudmark Names George A. Riedel Chief Executive Officer

Board Chairman and Former Nortel and Juniper Networks Senior Executive Joins Security Leader to Help Meet Global Demand for Protection from Evolving Network Threats.

Cloudmark, Inc., the most trusted leader in security, protecting traffic, data and infrastructure from network threats, announced that George A. Riedel has joined the company as its chief executive officer. Riedel, already chairman of Cloudmark’s board of directors, brings more than three decades of experience at top companies, including senior executive positions at Nortel Networks, Juniper Networks and McKinsey & Company, to his new role at Cloudmark. He succeeds Hugh McCartney, who has served as CEO since 2005 and will continue in an advisory role with the company.

“On behalf of the board and myself, let me recognise and thank Hugh for his significant leadership contributions over the last decade at Cloudmark,” said Riedel. “Cloudmark has established itself as a trusted leader in security by remaining at the forefront of innovation for more than a decade, providing critical protection for service providers and enterprises, and their users and subscribers.”

In addition to his role at Cloudmark, Riedel is also an independent board member who currently serves on the boards of several leading technology companies. Most recently, he served as president of business units and chief strategy officer of Nortel Networks, where he led the restructuring and sale of various business units and IP through a series of transactions generating more than $8 billion.

Prior to joining Nortel, Riedel was vice president of strategy and mergers and acquisitions for Juniper Networks in Sunnyvale, Calif., leading a series of acquisitions, including Netscreen, which doubled the size of the company over two years. Previously, he was a director at McKinsey & Company, where he spent 15 years advising clients in the telecommunications and technology sectors in Asia and North America on a range of strategy and growth issues. Riedel holds a BS with distinction in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Virginia and an MBA from Harvard University.

As messaging remains a top threat vector and a primary entry point for attackers into enterprises and consumer endpoints, Cloudmark has built a leadership position in messaging security, delivering critical protection to organisations worldwide. The company’s carrier-grade software solution is uniquely able to address the most complex messaging threats at the most intense scale and volumes for the world’s largest and most demanding messaging environments. The company has rapidly grown to protect more than 120 tier-one communication service providers with more than one billion subscribers worldwide and 70,000 enterprise customers through partners from ever-evolving and increasingly sophisticated network threats.

Cloudmark has also continued to expand the breadth of its security innovation, most recently with the introduction of Cloudmark Security Platform for DNS, a major new addition to the company’s solution portfolio that delivers comprehensive protection of DNS networks, infrastructure and traffic for service providers and enterprises.

“As the security landscape continues to shift dramatically and more DNS-related breaches at both enterprise and service providers are reported publicly, it’s clear that the market needs a more advanced solution to deal with both infrastructure and business threats,” continued Riedel. “With the recent launch of Cloudmark’s virtualised DNS security solution, I am excited about taking on the leadership of the company and look forward to working with the team and our partners to drive our next phase of growth.”
