Army flies in to promote STEM careers

The Army and the RAF are among a host of major employers, educational institutions and specialist organisations who will be hoping to inspire students into a future in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), at a series of UK-wide careers events launching in Leeds.

The STEMtech LIVE! mission is to give 14-25 year old students, graduates and job seekers guidance and insight into the exciting range of educational and career choices in STEM.

“With more than 60% of the jobs in the UK predicted to require STEM skills in the next 10 years, STEMtech LIVE! careers’ events are an opportunity for young people to find out about the future of work in these industries and receive real advice, guidance and access to experts, employers and further and higher education providers,” says event organiser, Tina Lucas. “These events bring an inspiring range of opportunities direct to students at a time in their life when they are making key decisions that will determine their future.”

A spokesperson from the Army says:“The Army is always recruiting and events, such as STEMtech LIVE!, help us showcase to potential recruits the wide variety of job opportunities available. The Army recruits for specialist positions that focus on STEM and our Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College is one of the country’s leading sixth form colleges which trains ambitious students for specialised technical officer careers in engineering, business or logistics.”

Career and Enterprise workshop zones

As well as the chance to try the Army’s Apache helicopter simulator and learn about its range of STEM-skill careers there will be a number of themed zones where visitors can find advice and practical support. The Careers Zone will be hosted by Capita Careers Advisory Service and UK Careers Academies, and is set up to give visitors advice on everything from CVs to interviews, and help with navigating the sometimes overwhelming array of study and training options available.

The Enterprise Zone, supported by the Prince’s Trust and Youth Employment UK will offer information on setting up your own business, including advice on tax, marketing and crucially where to find grants and ongoing help and support.

A range of national organisations including colleges, universities and teacher training providers will be on hand to advise on further study options in STEM, from A levels to degrees and teacher training.

STEMtech LIVE! will be in Leeds at the New Dock Hall, Royal Armouries Square on Friday 13th February 2015 from 10:00am until 4:00pm. To register in advance, or book an hour-long slot for your school or college group Click Here >
