Sunderland BID Goes The Extra Mile

A UNIQUE training initiative is set to help shoppers at a North East retail venue get on track to a healthier lifestyle and prepare for the Sunderland City 10k.

The Start Me Up For Sunderland programme will be returning to the Bridges shopping centre on February 26, the latest in a series of events organised by the Sunderland BID as part of late night Thursdays in the city.

The initiative, which offers participants the chance to take part in easy group runs with qualified coaches, along with training tips and mentoring, is designed to help people prepare for the Sunderland City 10k and to encourage people to lead an active lifestyle.

Anyone wanting to take part in the taster session simply needs to turn up at the Bridges and join the guides from run organisers, Events of the North, in a 5k run across the city.

The session is the latest event which is part of an exciting programme of activities taking place each week during Thursdays late night shopping evenings.

“This is a great opportunity for people in Sunderland to get involved with an exciting initiative,” said Ken Dunbar, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID.

“The Start Me Up For Sunderland programme not only helps people who are in training for the city’s half marathons but, anyone who wants to kick start getting fit too.

“The evening events on Thursday have been very successful so far and are helping us to showcase what Sunderland has to offer after business hours.”

The group will leave the Bridges at 6.15pm and will return at approximately 7.15pm.

During the evening there will be a pop-up stall in the Bridges that will give shoppers the opportunity to sign up for the run and for future Start Me Up For Sunderland events.

Parking at the Bridges is free from 5.30pm until 9pm on Thursdays in the Bridges, with most of the centre’s major retailers staying open until 8pm.
