RGU Partners with Quail to Enhance Staff Communications

Robert Gordon University, one of Scotland’s top performing higher education facilities, has installed Quail Digital’s wireless headset technology to improve staff communications throughout its campus library.

Constructed in 2013 as part of RGU’s new Riverside East campus in Aberdeen, the Library Tower operates over five floors, each with a separate faculty focus. In addition to over 250 workstations, the new library encompasses a central ‘Welcome Desk’ –instead of a traditional issue desk, - which enables receptionists to direct students to Help Points on the upper floors, where Library Assistants are available to answer queries.

Due to the extended layout of the new premises, the learning resources team required a system which would enable clear communication between individuals over a wide coverage area, without disturbing students engaging in quiet study.

Quail’s Digital Headset system, comprising 15 headsets and four base stations, has been installed to deliver high quality wireless team communication throughout the facility. Receptionists based at the Welcome Desk can use the system to alert colleagues on the upper floors to student enquiries, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and effectively. Headsets also enable rapid deployment of staff to busy areas, helping to streamline operations.

Commenting on the installation, Margaret Buchan, Associate Director of Academic and Reader Services at RGU Library, said: “Quail’s Digital Headset System has made a huge difference to our working environment. Its discreet nature is perfect for use in a quiet study area, while the excellent range of coverage enables seamless interaction between staff, regardless of where they are based in the Library Tower. Everything is hands-free, which means users can work at a keyboard or shelve books, while simultaneously being available to assist students.”

Tom Downes, CEO of Quail Digital added: “In a busy establishment which covers a wide area, it’s important to invest in technology that can improve communications, efficiency and team working. We’re used to seeing our headsets being used in the retail, food service and medical sectors, so to see them successfully applied within the RGU library is testament to the value they can bring to any working environment.”
