New recruits encourage others via video diaries

A leading civil engineering company is on the hunt for new apprentices – with a little help from its latest recruits.

Three apprentices recruited by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK last month, are providing an insight into life as an apprentice via video diaries on the company’s website.

Dylan Morrison, Geraint Fon Williams and Kevin Keicher, part of a new intake of five, talk about their experiences in the video diaries and will be giving regular updates on how they’re getting on as they progress through Jones’ Bros award-winning plant operative apprentice scheme.

Jones Bros is currently recruiting six apprentice plant operators for the next set of apprenticeships in May, with successful candidates spending the first eight weeks or so in the training centre in Ruthin, before being sent to one of the company’s many construction sites around the UK to continue their training.

Huw Jones, managing director of North Wales-based Jones Bros, said: “We were keen to let our apprentices record their experiences as they progress through our apprenticeship scheme as we value their opinions and felt that their personal testimonies would prove powerful and helpful to potential employees.

“Our belief in the importance of training the next generation of construction workers and engineers has paid dividends for our company as we undertake more and more major projects across the UK.

“We are well placed to carry out large schemes because, unlike some other companies, we continued to recruit and invest in our trainees during the recession. Many of our employees have been with the company for a considerable number of years, frequently working alongside their own family members.”

Apprentices earn a wage from the outset as employees of Jones Bros, undertaking an 8-10-week course before going out to one of the company’s many sites.

Jones Bros trainees undergo Foundation Modern Apprenticeships working towards their NVQ Level 2. The company runs its scheme through Construction Skills Wales and advertises the vacancies on its website, in the local press and through Careers Wales.

Founded in the 1950s and employing approximately 300 people, Jones Bros has grown rapidly in the last decade. It is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, flood and marine defence and renewable energy projects around the UK.
