Heaton dad to run 150 miles in 12 months for charity

A father of one from Heaton, Newcastle, has set his aims high, to complete one competitive run a month throughout 2015 to raise money for charity.

Paul Crame, 36, has already completed three challenges this year, competing in the York Brass Monkey, Harewood House and Kirkley Hall half marathons in January, February and March.

He hopes to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, ForCrohns, the Royal British Legion and Prostate Cancer UK.

A former runner with Gateshead Harriers Paul said: “I used to love running but gave it up as a teenager in favour of football. I recently got back into it last year when I ran the Great North Run.

“You could say I got the running bug and wanted to give myself a challenge for 2015 to keep fit and achieve something worthwhile, so I thought up the 12 runs in 12 months idea.”

Paul was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease himself in 2007, and wanted to raise money for a Crohn’s charity, whilst also being able to support other charities that benefit children, men, women and the armed forces.

“I wanted to run to raise money for a wide spectrum of people, and this helped me to choose the charities that I did. I’ve got friends in the armed forces and 1 in 3 people are touched by cancer these days. I’d like to raise £500 for each of my chosen charities and, thanks to the support of friends, family and colleagues, I’m well on the way to achieving that.”

Paul works for Newcastle-based Metnor Construction which has supported his efforts by sponsoring his running T-shirts and giving a generous donation towards the cause, which to date, has raised over £1,730.

Keith Atkinson, Managing Director at Metnor Group Ltd., said: “We’re delighted and proud to support Paul on his 12 month epic running journey. Paul works away from home as part of his job with us, and it must take great commitment to stick to a training programme whilst he is on the road. Everyone at Metnor has got behind Paul and we wish him well.”

Also supporting Paul along the way is Lily, his 8 year old daughter, who has taken a leaf out of her father’s book by taking part in the Junior Great Run event with him in September.

In the meantime, Paul continues to train for his next event which is a 10k taking place in the Blyth Valley in April.
